Adopt-A- Family is coordinated by the DHSS, Division of State Service Centers, under leadership of the Human Services Council, Inc., a 501c3 advisory board. This relationship allows for a public-private partnership that works to support families throughout the year. Adopt-A- Family is completely funded by individuals, community agencies, churches, and corporations with administrative support from DHSS/DSSC. Therefore, all donations are managed by the Human Services Council, Inc. and 100% of all donations are used to provide direct support to needy families.

Stay Connected

Year-round, the Adopt-A-Family program aids families in crisis -- those struggling with illness, homelessness, domestic violence, poverty or unemployment. At Adopt-A-Family, we try our hardest to provide assistance to families who need a hand up, and not a hand out. During a typical year, the Adopt-A-Family program, with the help of the Human Services Council of New Castle/Kent/Sussex counties, has provided urgently needed assistance to more than 4,500 Delaware families in need, totaling more than 15,000 individuals. Most of the beneficiaries are single-parent households, children, and senior citizens. Find out more below!

Products such as diapers, clothing, and other personal baby care items are provided for children up to 24 months old.

School supplies and uniform gift cards are provided to school children. Examples of items donated include 3-ring binders, large backpacks without wheels, combination locks, computer flash drives, dictionaries, thesauruses, composition books, notebooks, filler paper, pens, pencils, calculators, and other supplies. The goal of this program is to encourage a positive attitude towards school.

An Overview:

Giving people a hand up, not a hand out

This program links community sponsors interested in providing holiday assistance to children, nursing home seniors, and elderly individuals living alone with gifts and/or gift certificates. Families and seniors have the independence to make their own holiday shopping choices.

We provide products used by families on a daily basis to operate a household and maintain a stable home environment.  We accept donations of household and hygiene items such as small kitchen appliances, kitchen and bedroom linens, toiletry items, and haircare items.
